A Forest In Our Master Bedroom

(Here you can see the outline with chalk, the brighter lines are the paint)

I must say, I didn't spend my 4th of July weekend like most of you did. Yes, fireworks, great food, family and friends were involved, but not as much as painting was. Yes, you heard me. I did say painting. While most of you were spending your entire weekend relaxing with your friends and family, I decided that major changes needed to be made in certain areas of our home, starting with paint. When I say painting, I'm not referring to painting an entire room the same color, I'm talking about artwork on the walls. Yes, artwork that's meant to look like wallpaper, at least that's what I was aiming for. You guys can be the judge of that. Remember the boring brown wall in our master bedroom, the one I was complaining about last week? Well, I'm happy to report that it's no longer boring and it has become the focal point of the room. I still have lots to do, installing curtains is next. I'm hoping to tackle that project next weekend and I am still on the hunt for the perfect mirror. A chandelier also needs to be installed, but I haven't won that battle with Bobby yet. I'll never be able to understand why men have a love affair with ceiling fans. Stay tuned for a picture of this room with a chandelier, it will happen.

Here is how my long weekend started.

Friday night:

7PM drove to Michael's Arts & Crafts and purchased paint, chalk, and two cans of sealer spray

7:30PM arrived at home, fed and walked the dogs

7:45PM changed from a fabulous outfit to an old tank top and sweats

8:00PM a crazy mad woman took over my mind and body and didn't stop painting until 1AM.

1:30AM after showering and having made a sandwich, the boyfriend comes home

1:35AM all you hear is OMG, coming out of the boyfriend's mouth over and over again as he enters the master bedroom

1:38AM the boyfriend goes on to ask "How much did you pay a muralist to do this? Why didn't you tell me about this?"

1:40AM I convinced the boyfriend that it was me that did the job, and by then I was too exhausted to continue convincing him that I didn't copy the pattern from anyone, and I decided to go to bed. As I closed my eyes, I heard the words "it looks awesome" from Bobby. I went on to dreaming that I was Kelly Wearstler's best friend and she liked my work so much that she decided to make it a wallpaper. She thanked me for my idea by sending me 20 pairs of Christian Louboutin's and two Barcelona chairs in white. Hey, we all have our right to dream of what we want.

I can't take all the credit since I borrowed the idea from this young house, see here. I only used the white chalk to trace the pattern on the wall. I didn't copy the pattern obviously, it's something I came up with and it's probably why it took me 5 hrs from start to finish. I suggest you use chalk first as opposed to paint, that way you can make sure that you are happy with the end result. Also, I ended up returning the sealers since I painted over the chalk instead.

After months of trying to come up with ideas of things to do in this room, and since the wallpapers I like cost a small fortune, I decided to create my own. I am very pleased with the way it turned out and I must say Bobby is too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I think I would change the lampshades to the blue color of your other wall. You did an AMZING (I sang that in a high F just for impact) job. That's how I do things too. Something pops in my head and I just start working on stuff.

Wow! It looks awesome. I love what you have done, and I can't wait until its "finished" (although, it looks great now!).

Thats fabulous you freehanded it. Really adds some visual interest to the space. 5 hours to do this is really fast too! It would have taken a lot longer to do wallpaper.

The only thing I can add is I'd love to see the trees shaded a bit to add some depth. Kind of like this:

Hello! I came across your blog via Cote De Texas's blog. Love what you've done to the wall! I look forward to reading future posts!! (and I agree- why, oh why do men love ceiling fans so much???)

It looks amazing! I love it with the blue walls in the rest of the room. It looks fab and I'm happy you did it this weekend so we got to see it!

Can't wait to see more. I'll be back!

Thank you everybody for your sweet comments. I was contacted by one of my favorite design blogs to do a before and after, I'm super excited about it. I turned into a crazy mad woman once again and finished the room last night for the reveal. I can't wait for all of you to see the finished product.

Mrs. Limestone- Thank you for your recommendation. I actually had that idea in mind but ended up leaving it the way it is. I felt the trunks were too thin for it to be shaded and it might loose the contemporary feel I was going for. Thank you for your input.

That looks AMAZING! I am so stinkin' impressed. Great job!

And, like you, I decided it would be a great idea to paint this weekend too. I don't seem to know what to do with myself if it's the weekend and I don't have a paintbrush in my hand :-).

so painting directly on top of the chalk drawing works? the paint sticks no problem? i keep thinking somehow painting over the chalk would allow the paint to rub off in places. if that's not the case, i've found my alternative to wall stickers! hooray! love the outcome and agree with its so very cheri and the blue lamps. i think that would look amazing!

Where did you get your headboard? I've been looking for something of that color and scale. It's a beautiful room!

Cookie: I didn't have a problem with the paint once it was dry. If you are thinking of trying it, you shouldn't have a problem.

Emma: The Headboard is from Zgallery. I'm not sure if they still make it since we bought it a couple of years ago.

This is just kick-ass. I've been wanting to do a free-hand bit of art on my wall, sort of like this, for a while. Thanks for the inspiration!

And that's awesome that you are tackling new studies in life. I'd really like to do something of the sort, but am saving up a bit more before I dive in. Looking forward to following your blog!

It looks so fantastic! And, I commend you for taking the leap into being an interior designer. It's something I would love to do but I'm not quite sure how I do that since I've never had any "formal" training. I would love to hear more about how you went about getting into that industry... either in business for yourself or as an employee for someone else.

Just popping over from YHL.

Loved your re-do! I've been testing blues and browns for months and have yet to find the perfect combo for our bedroom. What did you use?

I'm with the first Amy- what are the colors on the wall? They look like the perfect shade.
